ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico Attorney General Gary King says he's definitely a candidate for the state's top office.

King tells The Associated Press that the paperwork has been filed for his gubernatorial campaign committee and he's starting to organize even though the race for the Democratic nomination is more than two years away.

He says he's starting early this time and that the magnitude of the race demands it.

Pointing to jobs, poverty and rural issues, he says there's plenty to be done in New Mexico.

King is a former state lawmaker and son of New Mexico's longest-serving governor, the late Bruce King.

He was first elected attorney general in 2006 and is serving his second term.

In 1998, King lost the Democratic primary for governor to then-Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez.

In 2002, he bowed out of the gubernatorial primary, acknowledging Bill Richardson's commanding lead.
