TV ad accuses Heather Wilson of poisoning drinking water

The Sierra Club has launched a new TV ad ripping Heather Wilson in her race for U.S. Senate against Martin Heinrich.
It's another ad aimed at making Wilson, the former Republican congresswoman, look like the Wicked Witch of the West for her votes on major energy bills of the Bush administration.
It is the second ad slamming Wilson for voting to protect oil companies from lawsuits for MTBE pollution. It depicts a young schoolgirl getting permission to leave the classroom and walking down the hallway to a water fountain. Guess what comes out of the faucet! Hideous brown fluid!
"When Heather Wilson allowed oil companies to put their toxic chemicals into the ground she was allowing it to go into our kids," the narrator solemnly intones.
MTBE is a gasoline additive that was used to oxygenate fuel, something environmentalists demanded in the Clean Air Act and then decided they did not like.
"Look," said Wilson campaign spokesman Chris Sanchez. "The same environmental extremists who want to increase our gas prices and our electricity bills are spending one million dollars to falsely attack Heather Wilson because she doesn't agree with their job-killing agenda."
Those environmental groups are backing Democratic congressman Martin Heinrich in the Senate race, and a new poll shows him with a lead of 48 percent to 43 percent for Wilson. Republicans say that poll, from Public Policy Polling, skews Democratic. Even if it does, it is the third poll in a week to give Heinrich an edge over Wilson.
Back to the basic question - did Heather Wilson vote to poison our kids? Of course not. The ads are wild hyper-exaggerations, and there will certainly be more from both sides.
