A more than 200 year old building is now nothing but rubble.
The historic Rancho de Corrales burned early Sunday morning.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 is told that Police were responding to an alarm call out, when they spotted the flames in the back of the building around 3 o'clock in the morning.
Corrales Fire Department Chief Anthony said he was one of the first to respond to the scene and says he immediately realized it wasn't a typical fire.
Martinez said the age of the building made it extremely difficult to fight, mainly due to the multiple layers of ceiling that have been built upon over the past two centuries.
Investigators said the fire started as an accident in the ceiling and quickly spread from there. The difficulty, however, was that the flames and smoke were trapped and hard to spot.
In the end it took crews 15 hours to put out the flames.
Only one room is salvageable, but crews say the rest is a total loss.
