ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The city of Albuquerque is expanding its free spay/neuter program to pet owners in moderate income households.

Previously, the program has been offered only to low income pet owners.

The free surgeries for reducing the city's pet population are now available to single people making less than $34,650 a year and families of four making less than $50,000.

The city says it is seeking more pets for free surgeries to reduce the number of unwanted animals.

In 2011, city animal shelters in Albuquerque killed about 7,000 dogs and cats.
