SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - State health officials have confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus this year.
The New Mexico Department of Health said Tuesday that a 63-year-old Bernalillo County man has contracted the more severe clinical form of the disease that includes neurological symptoms.
Department Secretary Catherine Torres says older adults are more susceptible to developing serious complications.
Mosquitoes in Sandoval and Bernalillo counties already had tested positive for West Nile this year.
New Mexico had four cases of West Nile last year, all of which included neurological symptoms.
The state had 25 confirmed cases in 2010, including one fatality.
