The beginning of the new school year is just around the corner, but one Albuquerque Public school is expecting too many students come Monday.

The school District said 42 more students than expected enrolled at North Start Elementary on Ventura near Alameda. That means some classes will have to be larger to accommodate them.

The District said if enrollment continues to grow, it will work with Double Eagle Elementary to accept transfers. That school is about two miles east of North Star.

Buses would be provided for students who request a transfer.

District Chief Operations Officer Brad Winters said the transfers would be voluntary.

"One of the benefits would be for parents that might want their children in smaller class sizes and that can happen, especially in kindergarten, second, fourth at double eagle," he said.

The District said overcrowding would likely continue to be a problem at North Star. The District is considering boundary adjustments to fix the problem.

The District will hold community meetings in September to garner input on the proposed new boundaries.
