Saturday marked the first gay pride event in Roswell. And while many supporters said it was a successful start to a new movement in the southeast New Mexico town, many protesters who also gathered there disagreed.

LGBTQ groups set up booths to educate people on everything from practicing safe sex to transgender issues.

Families and friends of every age came together to tell stories of shared experiences and to enjoy some entertainment.

Across the street, however, protests continued. Earlier in the day, protestors set up shop on the event grounds but Roswell police officers pushed them back.

LGBTQ activists said they hope similar events and being open to questions from those they say just don't understand will bridge a gap.

Event organizers worked together with groups from across southeast New Mexico. They plan to hold other pride events in different cities each year.
