The Albuquerque Academy community held a memorial for two teenagers who would have started their freshman year on Thursday.

Connor Mantsch and Connor Porter were killed in a plane crash in Arizona last month.

Wednesday night, their fellow students and teachers and their families gathered together for a memorial behind the school.

Associate head of Albuquerque Academy Don Smith said Wednesday was about helping students prepare for the mixed emotions that come with a new school year, and the loss of fellow classmates.

"Life is fragile," Smith said. "That's a tough lesson to learn."

A classmate of the two teenagers sang while others read a poem written by Connor Mantsch.

When the band started playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," family and friends, one by one, placed their memories into a medicine wheel where they will remain outside the school.

The school also remembered others in the Albuquerque Academy community who passed away this summer.
