3 new human West Nile virus cases in New Mexico; no deaths

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Three more New Mexicans have been diagnosed with West Nile virus infection, bringing the total in the state this year to eight human cases.

No deaths have been reported so far.

New Mexico Department of Health officials announced Wednesday that the new cases include a 55-year-old man from Bernalillo County, a 76-year-old man from Dona Ana County and a 76-year-old man from Bernalillo County.

They say the two older men are being treated for meningitis and encephalitis while the 55-year-old is being treated for uncomplicated fever.

Health officials announced three other West Nile cases in New Mexico last Friday - one each in Bernalillo, Dona Ana and Curry counties.

The first two human cases of the year were residents of Bernalillo and San Miguel counties.
