Based on what we saw from UNM over the last couple seasons, I will be the first one to tell you that I did not expect the Lobos to put up 66 points on Saturday against Southern. The Lobos scored in every way possible. Running, passing, fumble recovery for a score, kick return touchdown, interception return for a score, etc, etc, etc. You thought the team might actually need that extra digit on the scoreboard the former coach talked about.
It's obvious what a difference a coach makes. This is basicly the same group of guys we saw on the field last year, yet it didn't look anything like the same team. This group was disciplined. The Lobos only had one penalty for five yards on the entire game. The Lobos didn't have one turnover (heck, they didn't punt the entire game either). On a side note, Davie has this team dress in suits and ties when they leave the lockeroom after a game. That's classy. I remember players under the last coach that had cel phones on the sidelines during games. True.
Is this win an indication the Lobos can win the Mountain West? No. But like head coach Bob Davie said after the game, "It's better than being 0-1."
This group looked like they were having fun on Saturday, and that's what football should be about.
