ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - Alamogordo's top civilian leaders will temporarily oversee the public safety department while a search is conducted for a replacement for the city's chief.
Interim city manager Bob Carter and assistant city manager Matt McNeile will conduct staff meetings and other oversight at the city's Department of Public Safety until a new director is chosen.
The department provides police, fire and animal control services to the southern New Mexico city's 31,000 residents and has 71 police officers.
Outgoing public safety director Kelly Wallis tells the Alamogordo Daily News he believes the proposal will allow for normal operations at the department.
Wallis' last day on the job after 26 years with the department was Friday.
Carter says he plans to conduct a nationwide search for Wallis' replacement.
