University of New Mexico sophomore Devonta Tabannah will rejoin the football team next week, coach Bob Davie announced Wednesday.

Tabannah, a cornerback, was suspended for a violation of team rules on Aug. 27. He will rejoin the team Monday when it prepares for the Sept. 15 game at Texas Tech.  In late August, Tabannah was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

“My decision to reinstate Devonta is based on research of similar circumstances and suspensions involving other student-athletes around the country, as well as the manner in which Devonta has handled his mistake,” Davie said.

“Hopefully, he will take advantage of his second chance and others can learn from his mistake.”

Tabannah has agreed not to operate a motor vehicle until January 2013 as part of his penalty.
