The evacuation in response to a chemical spill has been lifted.

An overturned semi truck north of Roswell on U.S. 285 forced evacuations for nearby residents and businesses Friday afternoon.

The truck was carrying Sodium Hydroxide Solution, which can be extremely dangerous when it comes into contact with water.

State Transportation Department crews were on scene to place on the spill to control it, and workers have covered the spill with a tarp because of anticipated rain.

The off ramp for U.S. 285 to the Relief Route was closed as well as both lanes of the Relief Route and a section of Pine Lodge Road.

The American Red Cross also opened a shelter in the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell gymnasium Friday evening.
