ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A new poll commissioned by The Albuquerque Journal shows Democrat Martin Heinrich has a lead over Republican Heather Wilson in the race for New Mexico's open U.S. Senate seat.

The Journal poll shows Wilson remains competitive and has significant support from traditional Republican strongholds and independents.

Forty-nine percent of likely New Mexico voters said they would vote for Heinrich and 42 percent back Wilson.

Heinrich has represented the 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House since Wilson left the seat in 2009.

Eight percent of those surveyed were undecided.

The Journal poll was conducted by Research & Polling Inc. of Albuquerque and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. Landline and cellphone interviews with 667 likely voters were done Sept. 3 through Sept. 6.
