SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The police officer's union in Santa Fe is asking the city to hire an outside investigator to look into allegations of wrongdoing by police Chief Ray Rael.

The Santa Fe Police Officers Association sent a letter to Mayor David Coss asking him to look into allegations that Rael knew about and covered up cash collection problems at the city's parking division.

Rael ran the city's Human Resources Department at the time.

Union President Adam Gallegos told the Santa Fe New Mexican  Tuesday that an outside investigator is needed because internal affairs detectives report to the chief.

Rael calls the union's allegations "ridiculous." He also says since they involve actions he allegedly took while working in another department, the police department's internal investigation rules don't apply.
