Meteorologists predict big rain, snow for cold months

The hope for a good and drenching 2012 monsoon has fallen flat.
The National Weather Service said the rainfall was not enough to quench a dangerously dry New Mexico.
"Plenty of the state is in severe to I think exceptional drought.," said Albuquerque National Weather Service Meteorologist-in-Charge, Shawn Bennett.
However, Bennett said meteorologists world-wide are tracking the El Nino phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean.
This fall and winter, it looks like the weather pattern will steer a bunch of rain to New Mexico starting as soon as this month.
"We'll see a much above normal rainfall across the state and especially in the south," Bennett said.
Bennett also said if we are lucky, this bonus wet winter weather will help guide us out of the drought, which will help everyone from farmers to fun-seekers.
"It will bring additional snow-pack, a better ski season - things that people really like," Bennett said.
On the flipside, heavy snow and rain could have its consequences.
"I-40 could be shut down as we experience more winter storms, even I-25 going north etc. so those are some of the hazards that could come with increased precipitation driven by the El Nino," Bennett said.
A trade-off for a state thirsty for rain.
Bennett said there is always a chance El Nino will not turn out like scientists have predicted, however most of the data gathered points to a wet fall and winter for New Mexico.
