NM museum displays Sheriff Garrett's hearse

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The hearse that carried the New Mexico lawman made famous for gunning down outlaw Billy the Kid is now on display in Las Cruces.
The Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department says it took two decades of negotiations to get the horse-drawn hearse. It was recently purchased and donated to the department for permanent installation at the Historical Museum of Lawmen.
The department says plans for a public reception are in the works.
Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett won international fame for shooting Billy the Kid in 1881.
In 1908, Garrett was mysteriously shot down after drinking heavily and running up gambling debts.
Las Cruces resident Cal Traylor spearheaded the negotiations for the hearse and is the one who donated it to the sheriff's museum. Traylor says it's a rare piece of local history.
