SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The organizer responsible for the annual spectacle that kicks off the Fiesta de Santa Fe has stepped down from his post amid criticism about this year's event.

The Santa Fe chapter of the Kiwanis Club says organizer Ray Valdez was replaced by Raymond Sandoval as event organizer.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports Sandoval was unwilling to describe the decision further on Tuesday.

Valdez's resignation follows criticism that the Sept. 6 event was too expensive, lacked tradition and was not family friendly.

Valdez had also been the president-elect of the Kiwanis club.

He was replaced in that position by Lynette Kennard.

The yearly event concludes with the burning of a giant marionette as a way to drive away the doom and gloom of the previous year.
