ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Department of Corrections is stalling a pilot program that would only allow inmates to receive mail on postcards.

Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel told the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday that he was delaying the new mail restrictions because of questions raised by family members and the Journal.

A memo written by Steve Nance, warden of the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility in Las Cruces, said the prison would no longer accept letters received after Sept. 24.

The memo said only postcards would be allowed and any that had designs, pictures, drawing or anything other than writing from the sender would be rejected.

But families said the changes will hurt inmate links to family. Marcantel said the restrictions were necessary to stop drugs from entering the 1,200-man prison.
