New details have been released surrounding Thursday’s deputy-involved shooting that left an Albuquerque man dead.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston, with the responding agency, met with reporters Friday morning detailing more information.

Houston said the suspect, Samuel Jason Marquez, had made threats against his mother and that she even had an active restraining order in place at the time of the shooting.

Marquez was 44 years old.

Houston said Marquez had a long criminal history that includes robbery, battery and homicide.

Marquez went to his mom’s house near Arenal and Coors at around noon on Thursday.. Marquez and his mother started arguing over money, said Houston.

A family member then called 911.

When deputies arrived, Houston said Marquez walked out of the house with a knife up to his mother’s throat.

Two deputies asked him repeatedly to put the knife down, but Marquez didn’t. He allegedly yelled that he was going to kill his mom.

Marquez then turned back toward the house and tried to take his mom with him. That is when deputies got within five feet, saw their chance and fired, said Houston.

The sheriff will not say how many times Marquez was hit or where.

Marquez’ mom received a cut but was treated and released from the hospital.

The two deputies involved are on paid leave. They are Larry Tonna and Matt Wolke. Tonna has worked in the department for 10 years, Wolke for 7 years.

Albuquerque police and New Mexico State Police continue to investigate the shooting.

Sheriff Houston believes his deputies were justified.
