A bullet landed in Aggie Memorial Stadium and hit a woman in the leg during the Rio Grande Rivalry football game between New Mexico and New Mexico State, university police deputy chief Andy Bowen said.

The woman was transported to the hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

It appeared the bullet was shot in the air from outside the stadium in the desert open space south of the football field around 8:15 p.m., Bowen said.

He said the woman sat in the section B, on the southside of the stadium. Witnesses said they didn't even know the woman was shot.

This happened in the final minutes of the third quarter. UNM just scored a touchdown to take a 20-7 lead around the time the gun was believed to have been fired.

Bowen said it's possible the gun was shot as part of a celebration. Police are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call NMSU police at 575-646-3311.

The Lobos won the game 27-14.
