SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Legislative auditors say state government office space has expanded by 6 percent in the past four years while the number of workers had dropped by 14 percent.
It's costing taxpayers $47 million a year for the state to lease office space, and a Legislative Finance Committee audit report on Wednesday recommends more consolidation in the use of buildings owned and leased by government.
To improve planning and management, auditors said the Legislature should consider having the General Services Department oversee all state-owned buildings.
Currently a number of agencies handle their own building management, including the judiciary and Department of Game and Fish.
The Department of Transportation and the Department of Cultural Affairs objected to the proposal, telling lawmakers they have unique building needs and can best manage their properties.
