In this week's Best Bites, a different kind of bakery has opened its doors in Nob Hill.

You won't find muffins, chocolate cake or apple pie at this one.

Instead, Mean Bao is serving up items like Dan Tat, Bolo Bao, and sweet milk rolls.

Asian-fusion is the theme at Mean Bao bakery on Central avenue near Tulane.

Owner Sarah Lim bakes up some crowd favorites like hot dog breads but there are plenty of other items you've probably never heard of.

"We have a few things you might find in a traditional Taiwanese bakery like Dan Tat which is a traditional custard tart or Bolo Bao which is sweet filled bread with a crispy crunchy topping," says Lim.

She explains the acronym OMG MBB CCPC.

"It's 'Oh My Goodness Mean Bao Bakery Chocolate Chip Pecan Cookie'," says Lim.

Or you can try the an Asian twist on the chocolate chip cookie: Green tea with cashews and white chocolate chips. Asian flavors haven't always been in Sarah's kitchen. It all started with her husband, Andy, who is Taiwanese.

"I just loved the desserts and pastry items we were finding in Taiwan when we went there and we don't really have too much of that in Albuquerque," says Lim.

You won't find an overwhelming amount of selection at Mean Bao. The focus is quality over quantity. The bakery never serves day-old items. In fact, it donates all leftovers at the end of the day to charity.

As for the name Mean Bao?

"In Mandarin 'mian bao' means bread. So we changed the spelling a little bit and made it mean so we make a mean bread and we have our little mascot which is our angry bread."
