We've heard time and time again about how important it is to get regular dental checkups, - but if you're homebound, that can be difficult and expensive.
That's why this week's Hometown Hero created Dental Care In Your Home.
Cathy Elliott has been a dental hygienist for 41 years.
"Everybody deserves a healthy smile," she said.
But, not everyone is able to get one, so Elliott created Dental Care In Your Home.
"Many of my patients were not coming in anymore. When I inquired of family members they said, either their custom wheelchair was too large or they had become to frail to come in," Elliott said.
"We have what would be considered a high-tech dental office on wheels." "If they just need a cleaning, we do that. If they need filings, we do that. If they need extractions or partials or dentures," explained Elliott.
She and Dr. Tom Collins donate their time to people who are homebound.
"She's making services available that our residents either would not be able to get or it would be very difficult to for them to get out of their home here," said Gerald Hamilton.
He owns the Bee Hive Homes where Helen Salvo lives.
Salvo says she used to get cleanings twice a year, but now she can't.
"I'm more or less confined. I can't walk," she said.
For Salvo, Dental Care In Your Home is a convenient necessity from people she considers heroes.
"It's gotta be just a charitable heart," she said. "They're giving of their time, which is awesome."
