A woman was hit and killed by a Rail Runner Express train in Waldo Canyon Tuesday night.

Officials said the woman, later identified as 37-year-old Veronica Aguilar, was killed by the southbound 517 Rail Runner between the 599 and Kewa rail station around 6:15 p.m.

They said the woman was walking along the tracks and then tried to cross as the Rail Runner hit her at 79 mph. They are not sure if she intentionally crossed as the train passed.

Police have yet to confirm if alcohol was a factor or if it was a suicide. State police searched Aguilar's pickup, parked near the scene, to see if there was any information as to why she was walking along the tracks.

The Rail Runner has been moved and took the 72 passengers to their stops further south. Bus bridges are taking southbound passengers from the 599 around to the Kewa station, and are taking passengers northbound from Kewa to 599.

The tracks between 599 and Kewa will be closed through the night, but business should be back to normal in the morning.
