FAA announces funding for new Taos runway

TAOS, N.M. (AP) - The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded more than $1 million to help design a new runway at the airport in Taos and install a system to monitor overflights of cultural sites in the area.
The money from the FAA's airport improvement program will be used to begin designs for a new 8,000 foot crosswind runway at Taos Regional Airport.
The FAA says the runway project is expected to cost $20 million and will be eligible for more federal funding.
It's expected to open in 2015. The monitoring system is part of environmental measures designed to address concerns about aircraft flying over the Taos Pueblo's traditional cultural sites.
It should be operational late next year. The grants were announced Saturday.
