It is hard to imagine anything good coming out of the death of a four-year-old girl.
Bernalillo County Sheriff's officials believe the girl died from head trauma over the weekend. Her father, Anthony Chavez, and the girl's stepmother are charged in the death.
The incident has devastated the four-year-old's family. They identify her as Rebecca Sanchez. Her Grandmother, Darlene Hernandez, watched the girl a lot while her mother worked. She is haunted by the call she got from Rebecca's mother over the weekend.
"She's dead. And I'm like who's dead? She goes, my Becka she's dead. My Becky's dead. They said she's dead. They killed my Becky," Hernandez told KOB Eyewitness News 4 Tuesday.
Suspect Anthony Chavez is Darlene Hernandez's son. She is lashing out at him after deputies said Chavez came up with different reasons as to how Rebecca became injured.
"It was no accident. They killed her," Hernandez said.
To add to the pain, Hernandez said their insurance company may now be balking at paying a life insurance policy on Rebecca; money the family was hoping to use for her funeral expenses.
This is where there's one small bright spot in all of this.
A woman, who did not want to be identified, contacted KOB Tuesday saying she wanted to help pay for the little girl's funeral expenses. She is a complete stranger to the family. On the phone, the woman told Darlene Hernandez she was sorry about what happened and that she's praying for the family. After offering to pay for the funeral Darlene Hernandez told the woman she's an angel. The woman replied saying "I'm not an angel I just love children."
The woman said she did not want any money from the family even if the insurance company decides to pay the life insurance claim.
