The NMSU board of regents has named Manuel Pacheco as interim president.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported his salary as $360,000.

The five-member governing board for the university voted Wednesday to appoint Pacheco to lead the institution, while the regents seek a more-permanent replacement for outgoing President Barbara Couture.

Just over a week ago, the regents formally announced the departure of Couture through a mutual separation agreement.

The regents have declined to specify their reasoning.

Couture will receive a $453,000 separation payment, a so-called "golden parachute."

The News-Sun reported that Pacheco, 70, previously served as interim president from June 2009 to January 2010. Couture took the helm at the start of 2010.
