SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The closure of a private conference center in the mountains east of Santa Fe is hitting hikers who used its property to access a trail to Glorieta Baldy peak.

The LifeWay Glorieta Conference Center closed access to the trailhead in August and plans to keep it closed until June.

The financially troubled conference center once was used year-round but the Southern Baptist Church decided last year to close it except for June and July.

Director Hal Hill tells the Santa Fe New Mexican hikers who crossed its property to park and access Santa Fe National Forest trails created a liability.

Charlie O'Leery of the Santa Fe Conservation Trust says the trailhead's sudden closure caught many hikers and bikers by surprise because it was publicly accessible for so long.
