ZUNI PUEBLO, N.M. (AP) - New rules from the Zuni Housing Authority are forcing some tribal residents into giving up some of their pets.

The Gallup Independent reports (http://bit.ly/z0cIwR) that the agency recently amended its pet policy limiting residents in rent-to-own units to only one dog or face eviction.

The move has already forced some residents into giving up animals to foster homes.

It also has sparked a group of local animal crusaders to circulate a petition to ask the Tribal Council and the Zuni Housing Authority to allow some residents to keep two dogs.

Tribal officials say the dog population has exploded in recent years on the pueblo.

Zuni Game and Fish Capt. Jay Soseeah said dogs at the pueblo run in packs of 5 to 10 and are killing sheep outside the village.
