Bob Davie should be the Coach of the Year

What Bob Davie's done with the University of New Mexico football program is nothing short of amazing.  Following Saturday's win at Hawaii, UNM is 4-and-3 on the year.  Their record won't catch the eye of national voters.  College football experts aren't pegging the Lobos as BCS busters, but considering where this program was less than 12 months ago Davie can be considered a miracle worker.

If this were another Disney-made sports movie, Bob Davie would play himself because I don't know if anyone else could have saved this sinking ship in such a short period of time.  UNM had one win in each of the last three years.  They were considered by many to be one of the worst programs in the country.  Then in comes this former coach who's been off the sidelines for 10 years to bring this group together.  Can't you picture it on the big screen now?  Davie brings in a simple style of discipline.  He under-sells to the fans and over-delivers on game day.  The players wear suits coming out of the lockerroom.  He immediately suspends any player after a violation of team rules.  He doesn't have time for guys who aren't on board with his plan.  This movie script is writing itself, isn't it?

Out work, out hit, out discipline.  Those are his mottos.  Each week he preaches "narrow the focus".  He tells his players to take the stairs instead of the elevator.  He changes the offense to a triple option because that's all he has the talent for at this point.  None of his players are four-star recruits, yet now all he needs is a couple more wins to get them bowl eligible.

Bowl eligible?!  Those two words were not spoken (or even thought) by the most positive Lobo fan over the past three years.  We're only halfway through the season, but it's a foregone conclusion that Davie will be the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.  I will even take it a step further and say he's the "national" winner.  Davie won't win a national championship like a Saban, Muschamp or Kelly could, but Davie jumped onto the Titanic when it was going down with Leonardo DiCaprio and found a way to plug the hole and drive the ship to safe waters.

That deserves some kind of honor.
