The state is considering allowing people who have a license to carry concealed guns to bring their weapons into New Mexico state parks.

The Energy Minerals and Natural Resources Department held a public meeting in Santa Fe on Wednesday to receive some input on the idea.

Individuals opposed to the plan said they worry about safety, but supporters said safety is the whole reason they need their guns.

Under the proposal, concealed guns can only be fired in state parks in self defense.

National parks have allowed visitors to carry concealed weapons since 2010.
