City holds hearing about West Side Walmart

During a public hearing in front of Albuquerque's Environmental Planning Commission Thursday, people sounded off about traffic, protecting the bosque and the size of the proposed Walmart at Coors and Montano.
As of late Thursday evening, the commission hadn't reached a decision on whether to approve plans for the store.
During the debate, some people lashed out at the company. "Walmart is out to establish a monopoly on food products," said Ladera West Neighborhood Association President Bob McCannon.
Some people spoke out in support of the planned Walmart. "What we want, is the people to know, is the general public supports this store and only a few people are against it. It is the same people who oppose every Walmart, plus those who obstruct attempts to develop vacant property," said one speaker Thursday.
Walmart officials said they've worked with the city and local residents to address traffic concerns. Officials also cited a petition that included Walmart supporters. "We found 15,000 folks who are in support of the store," said Joshua Phair with Walmart. Residents questioned the numbers and how they were obtained.
