SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A Santa Fe ordinance forcing drunk drivers to give up their vehicles has given the city a bump in revenue.

City Attorney Alfred Walker told the Santa Fe New Mexican  on Thursday the DWI Forfeiture Ordinance has led to more than $230,000 going into city coffers.

Walker says the law, which has been in effect since 2009, is not meant to be a money-maker. He says it's meant to improve safety.

The ordinance allows the city to forfeit any vehicle driven by a person with a DWI conviction or one that is knowingly loaned to a person with a previous DWI conviction.

Santa Fe has seized 64 vehicles this year.

The number of seizures has led to the city buying another impound lot.
