Closed juvenile hearing held in Maine baby death

(AP) SKOWHEGAN, Maine - A prosecutor says a judge will likely rule in two to three weeks on whether the youngest person to be charged with homicide in Maine in at least 30 years is competent to stand trial.

A judge held a closed-door hearing Friday for the 11-year-old girl. She was charged last summer at age 10 with juvenile manslaughter in the death of 3-month-old Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway, who was staying overnight in the girl’s home in Fairfield. The girl’s mother was babysitting.

Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson says attorneys will file written motions by the end of next week. A decision will come after that.

The judge has three options. He can allow the trial to proceed if she’s found to be competent, or delay the trial or dismiss charges if she’s deemed incompetent.
