Grandparents of baby who ingested cocaine charged

Days after a two-year-old tested positive for cocaine, Santa Fe police are now charging the boy's grandparents with child abuse.
It was in the home of Carmella and David Wheeler that the couple was looking after their daughter's 6 and 2-year-old sons last week.
Carmella called police and told them the toddler had ingested some white powder, a substance she told officers she knew was cocaine.
This fact was confirmed when the child was tested at Christus St. Vincent Hospital.
"Obviously, putting them in an environment where a bindle of cocaine is located and allowing that child to have access to that bindle, and ingest the bindle and put the child in that type of harm, is enough justification for us to file the charges," Capt. Aric Wheeler, of the Santa Fe Police Department, said.
police said Carmella claimed there was a party at their house earlier in the week, and believed the cocaine was left over from that night, adding she did not know who the drugs belonged to.
David is also facing an additional charge for tampering with evidence.
Police said he tried to destroy the little paper bindle, or small envelope the cocaine was kept in.
It will now be up to the district attorney whether a warrant will be issue for their arrests.
