Police said two men robbed a Family Dollar store in southeast Albuquerque, but when the clerk failed to open the register, one of the men shot him in the leg.
Del Huggins works at the car wash next to the Family Dollar at Gibson and California, and said he saw the two men as they walked toward the store.
"And I heard a pop. Then, one of them came running down this alley, and another one was following at a fast rate of speed, and they went around that corner that way," Huggins said.
Huggins said there was a bad vibe from the men the moment he saw them.
"Made it a point to ignore them, so that they didn't notice me. So I just kept painting," he said.
Police described the two men as wearing hoodies and both had sunglasses. Officers searched the neighborhoods surrounding Family Dollar, but could not catch the suspects.
Police have not given many leads for the case, but Huggins said he expected one driving force for the crime based on what he has observed in the neighborhood.
"I think it was pretty shocking. I'm pretty sure it was a drug related thing. They probably needed a fix of some kind of drug, but I'm pretty sure they didn't get any money from what I understand," he said.
Police are looking at surveillance video from the store and from the car wash where Huggins saw the men to get a better lead on finding them.
Police said if anyone has information on the case to contact them.
