The New Mexico Gas Company confirmed natural gas prices this winter is expected to be the lowest it's been in ten years.

In fact, this month the price is already down 15 cents from 2011.

But, New Mexico Gas said you wont be getting in on the savings unless your home is prepared for the cold.

"Gas prices are stable right now because there is ample supply in the marketplace and because of that we're seeing ten year lows," said New Mexico Gas Company Communications Manager, Teala Kail.

Kail said you may be throwing those savings out the window and not even know it.

"I think people would be surprised at how much energy you can lose with a crack in the door, or a crack in the window or an improperly maintained furnace," said Kail.

New Mexico Gas said you can control some of the factors that go into your natural gas bill, including conservation efforts, your hot water usage, the temperature you set your thermostat during the day and night, how efficiently you use your gas appliances, how well your home is insulated and weatherized, and the purchasing of energy efficient equipment.

Using sealant outside your home, along with weather stripping indoors, goes a long way.

Little things like insulating your outlets and sealing the gap under your door can mean big savings too.

New Mexico Gas said with the combination of using these tips along with the lower gas prices, that it's possible this winter you could be seeing some of the lowest bills in years.

It's an enticing prospect, but Kail said these savings depend on making sure your home is ready for the cold weather.

"Ultimately the cost of a customer's bill will depend on the amount of natural gas that they use," said Kail.
