Some forest areas of the Sandia Mountains are so thick you can barely see ten feet through the trees. That is one reason the U.S. Forest Service is planning two prescribed burns.

The Hondo Fuels Reduction Phase will happen west of Cedar Crest. Five areas now ready for burning range in size from 14 acres to one acre. An area south of Zuzax will also be burned.

Two 30-40 acre spots in the Talking Talons area will also be burned. The Talking Talons project is a forest restoration project to improve the health of trees, to make them more resistant to drought and insects. The burns won't begin until there is some more rain or snow.
