LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Democratic state lawmaker from Dona Ana County says she's paid a fine levied by the New Mexico Secretary of State's office for campaign finance violations.

State Sen. Mary Jane Garcia says she paid the $1,200 fine Thursday to put the matter behind her and is still pursuing a waiver of the fine and an Attorney General's review.

She tells the Las Cruces Sun-News she doesn't want her constituents to think she's a crook. The Secretary of State Office alleged 12 violations of state campaign financing laws earlier this month.

They said Garcia withdrew money from her campaign account with checks payable to cash.

Garcia says she used the money to pay for expenses incurred in attending legislative committee meetings and sessions but will repay $3,980 to her campaign.
