Work on new lab security delayed amid overruns

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Work on a new security system at a nuclear weapons manufacturing site at Los Alamos National Laboratory is being delayed after cost overruns and construction problems.
The Albuquerque Journal reports a preliminary lab estimate contained in a National Nuclear Security Administration issue summary puts cost overruns at up to $25 million.
The lab has spent seven years and $213 million on the project. NNSA spokesman Josh McConaha tells the Journal the performance on the project has been unacceptable.
Lab spokesman Kevin Roark says details of the new security system are classified, but it includes sensors, alarms and "denial systems."
The system is to protect the lab's Technical Area 55. That's where plutonium research is done and nuclear bomb parts are made.
