Voters to decide top NM appellate court races

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Voters will decide whether Republican Gov. Susana Martinez has an opportunity to leave a lasting imprint on New Mexico's courts that resolve appeals and set legal precedents.
The governor's appointees to the state Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals are running in contested general election races in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans.
Only three Republicans have been elected to the Court of Appeals and none to the Supreme Court since New Mexico adopted its current system for selecting judges nearly 25 years ago.
In the Supreme Court race, Justice Paul Kennedy faces Democrat Barbara Vigil, a district judge in Santa Fe. Court of Appeals Judge Miles Hanisee is matched against Democrat Monica Zamora, a district judge in Albuquerque.
