Albuquerque south valley is holding its version of Zozobra Sunday evening.

El Kookooee began at 6:00 p.m. behind the South Valley Library on Isleta near Rio Bravo.

While Zozobra is a martyr sacrificed to erase collective worry and gloom, El Kookooee is a fabled bogeyman who serves to keep petrified children in line.

Its burning is a way to clean the slate of fear for another year.
