An accident killed two people and closed Highway 70 for several hours Wednesday in Las Cruces just east of the Sonoma Ranch exit.

Police say the accident happened just after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Preliminary information from the scene indicates that an Isuzu Rodeo was traveling westbound on Highway 70 when, for some reason, it crossed the center divide and struck a 4-door sedan traveling eastbound.

The driver and passenger of the 4-door sedan were killed as a result of the collision. They were the only occupants of the sedan.

The Rodeo rolled over onto Bataan Memorial East and its driver, and sole occupant, was ejected from the vehicle. She was initially transported to a Las Cruces hospital and then airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso. Her condition is not known at this time.

Both directions of Highway 70 remained closed while traffic investigators continued to gather evidence and diagram the scene.

Bataan Memorial East was also closed between Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and Mesa Grande Drive. Both roadways are are now open.
