Senate leader Michael Sanchez withstood a challenge from candidate David Chavez, retaining his seat easily with an unofficial vote count of 6,491 to 5,804.

Sanchez, the Senate Democratic Majority leader, had been targeted by ads for the Republican Chavez that were paid for by Reform New Mexico Now.

That PAC is run by Jay McCleskey, a top political advisor to Governor Susana Martinez.

The ads targeted the Valencia County Democrat for voting against the Baby Brianna bill, which would have mandated life sentences for child-killers.

Sanchez won 55 percent of the vote, compared to 45 percent for Chavez.
