New Mexico voters go along with revamping PRC

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A narrow majority of New Mexico voters have approved constitutional amendments aimed at streamlining the duties of the Public Regulation Commission, one of the state's most powerful and most scandal-plagued bodies.
With the approval, an independent superintendent position will be created to take on the PRC's duties of regulating insurance companies.
The other amendment transfers the commission's duties of chartering corporations to the secretary of state's office.
A third amendment that was approved by an overwhelming majority late Tuesday allows the Legislature to establish minimum qualifications for PRC candidates.
The reform push gained momentum after scandals forced two PRC members to resign in recent years, including Jerome Block Jr., who pleaded guilty to misuse of a state-issued credit card and violations of campaign finance laws.
