The bad economy has been really tough on the working poor, disabled and those on fixed incomes and getting enough to eat is a real concern.
The mobile food pantry program by Roadrunner is delviering food to those who need it the most. Roadrunner Food Bank driver Carlo Bacheci takes to the road everyday of the week to take on hunger around the state.
He said he's driven about 50,000 miles in the past year. He could have driven around the Earth twice.
"I deliver to Hobbs, Roswell, Eunice, Jal on the easter part of the state," he said. "Then I go to Reserve, Quemado, Datil, Pie Town."
Thirteen counties around New Mexico get help from the Roadrunner Food Bank. With so many counting on the help, Bacheci is motivated to get up everyday. There's no calling sick to hunger.
"You just feel - wakeup in a bad mood and you don't want to come to work, but you know the rewards at the end of the day - when you see the people," he said. "The rewards are great."
Nan'dei McNally had a car accident that left her unable to go back to work. She counts on the mobile food pantry to fill in some gaps. With medical expenses and other things that come up, some months what comes in is just not enough.
"I don't feel like I'm going through feast or famine any more," she said. "Of just spending my budget and living til that's all- and then living on ramen noodles everyday after that."
Gay Brown helps take care of her grandkids part-time. She is getting assistance and food stamps too.
"Not very much - that $50 don't go very far," she said. "I go to the grocery store and I get what I can get. But, the food pantry fills in where I don't get. It makes my meals. Without that? I couldn't make a meal."
For many asking for help is the hardest part. Pride was the McNally said she had to give up.
"It was hard to get used to, but now I am at peace with it and I'm just in gratitude," McNally said.
