Rain and hail in Ruidoso forced organizers to cancel a Veterans Day block party that had been a year in the making.

Organizers were still able to hold a special ceremony for veterans Saturday morning though it was a little wet.

The goal was to both thank service members and to spotlight Ruidoso as a centralized military rest and relaxation location.

"It's an outstanding opportunity for military families to be hosted by Ruidoso - I think it's important that it's a community that's not adjacent to a military institution but has highways to them, and is perfectly situated geographically to White Sands and Cannon as well as Fort Bliss," Brigadier General Hanson Scott said.

City officials said they were disappointed to have to cancel the festivities, but plan to offer plenty of events and opportunities for veterans year-round.
