New Mexico tops Davidson in wild late night comeback, 86-81

The New Mexico Lobos overcame a 16-point deficit to beat the Davidson Wildcats 86-81 in a nationally televised game Tuesday morning at University Arena in Albuquerque.
New Mexico (1-0) won the game from the free throw line. The Lobos shot 38-44 from the charity stripe in the game, Davidson (1-1) went 15-20 from the free throw line.
Tony Snell played big in the midnight matchup for New Mexico.
The junior guard shook off a tough start - he missed his first four shot attempts - to lead the Lobos with 25 points in 40 minutes of play.
Snell had a huge block to cement the Lobos' victory.
With Davidson down 82-78 with 35 seconds to play Chris Czerapowicz stepped back at the top of the key for a desperate three point shot.
Snell was right in his face before Czerapowicz could toss the ball. Snell grabbed the steal, tossed it to a streaking Kendall Williams who finished the play with a dunk that gave the 14,277 fans in attendance a 2 a.m. jolt.
Fans at the Pit didn’t have much to cheer for early in the game.
New Mexico shot 34 percent and hit just one three point shot in the first half. Davidson led 45-31 going into the second half.
Davidson had five players score in double digits. De’Mon Brooks scored 22 points to pace the Wildcats.
Williams added 17 points for the Lobos and was a near perfect 13-14 from the free throw line.
At one point in the game, Davidson out rebounded the Lobos 13-3. New Mexico eventually won the battle of the boards, 45-28.

The Lobos host the Davidson Wildcats in the second game of the 2012 ESPN Tip-Off Marathon, a 24-hour college basketball frenzy that fits perfect with the reputation of University Arena.
Both teams lost to Louisville - Davidson in the first round, New Mexico in the second - in the NCAA Tournament last season.
New Mexico plays a four guard lineup led by junior Kendall Williams and Tony Snell.
Davidson defeated Emory in its season opener 93-67.
The Wildcats are led by the defending Southern Conference player of the year De’Mon Brooks. The junior forward is on pace to score a career 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds.
