This Hometown Hero thinks horses deserve better

You've seen the reports of animals left on the side of the road severely neglected and abused.
Large animals are especially hard to care for because their care can be expensive - and of course you need lots of space.
It certainly takes someone special, like this week's Hometown Hero.
It's not exactly what you'd expect in the back of a luxury resort & spa.
"We're hoping to take the horses, make 'um usable. Rehabilitate them and put them back into the system where people want 'um," said Connie Collis. She's the Director of the Stables at Tamaya. She says she was struck by all the news reports of malnourished horses.
"We just know there's a problem," added Collis. So, she decided to be part of the solution. "There's a lot of horses out there that people can't afford to keep anymore. They're not all in dire need, but you know, the economy is bad and they don't have the money to keep their horses."
With the help of the Hyatt Tamaya, Collis created a horse rehabilitation program at the resort.
"These horses were all really sick. They were really having a lot of problems."
Right now, they have ten horses.
The idea is that people or corporations will help sponsor these animals and Collis and her team will nurse them back to health.
Troy Wood, the Director of Sales & Marketing at the resort said: "Basically adopt a horse. Where they come down and that group would spend the afternoon, whether it be building stables for their horse or news pens, or creating areas or whatever. Whatever fits in with their corporate culture and their idea."
But for now, much of the expense falls on Collis, though she says it's worth it, that these neglected horses deserve better.
"Horses are just like people, every one of them is different," Collis said.
